Cancer accounts for almost 50% of
the deaths of dogs and cats each year.
Cancer is the #1 health concern of pet owners. Cancer is also the most curable of all
chronic diseases in dogs and cats – curable, not just treatable.
A lot of myths surround
“Cancer”. It is not always a death
sentence. There are many emotional and
financial issues, and quality of life issues to be made. Do not be afraid that whatever decision you
make will be wrong. The diagnosis of
cancer is never easy; how to treat it must be well thought out. At the family pet clinic, we act as a team to
help you through these issues, and we will help you get the best care for your
pet.
To best support you and your pet
through the cancer diagnosis, we must determine the type of tumor it is. A biopsy is very important. Each tumor type is different and unique in
its behavior. We must know how much
cancer is present and where it is. This
includes a complete physical examination, lab work (such as chemistry profile,
complete blood count, and urinalysis), and X-rays of the chest and
abdomen. Also, this gives us insight
into the general condition of your pet – urinary, heart, and metabolic
diseases.
Cancer (and cancer treatment) can be
painful. However, we will not tolerate
your pet being in pain. Several
medications and treatment modalities are available. Cancer treatment may also cause nausea, and
may cause your pet to not want to eat.
We have medications to control nausea and vomiting, and we can use appetite
stimulants and special diets to maintain your pet’s health in other areas.
If you have any questions about
cancer, or any concerns about your older pets’ health, please do not hesitate
